Title Smartphone addiction among Penang teenagers. / Lim Huat Poh.
Abstract This study examined the playing pattern and behavior change of teenagers who are residing in Penang and their relation to smartphone addiction. Certain variables which cause teenagers to fall addiction were studied as well to determine the degree of influence they have on users. Teenagers are chosen to be the units of analysis in this research mainly because they are prone to fall addiction to smartphone usage more easily compared to other age groups. At times, they themselves do not realize that the technology of smartphones have taken over control of their lives. Data were collected from a sample of 70 respondents whose age ranges between 13-19 years using questionnaire. With the data collected, several analysis tests were done to study the playing pattern and the correlation between the variables. Result from the analysis‟ shows that the level of addiction is still moderate among the teenagers in Penang although most of the indications are slightly above neutral mark. Respondents display very minimal change in behavior when smartphones are not in their possession; and for usage wise, it is kept to a duration which is not too long to be considered addiction. Smartphone addiction 9 does have characteristics that are similar to other addictions. Addicts spend long hours doing it and become emotionally unstable without it. They prefer to be left alone with the smartphone, shying away from the society and get agitated with the slightest interruption that comes. Parents face difficulties dealing with children of such. But to be partly blamed for some who rewarded their children with a set at a very young age although the intentions are good. To the parents, safety and keeping in contact are key reasons for rewarding. In this modern time, children have a way of owning one even without the approval of parents. Low price and cheap start up packages make it easier. Four independent variables (boredom & loneliness, extra free time, excitement & feeling in control, introvert & shy personality) which are believed to be main contributors to the addiction by past researchers have been selected as part of the „subject of study‟ in this research. Analysis outcome reveals that the first 2 variables are indeed true; they are drivers of addiction. And highly importance that society takes note of this information. With the knowledge, necessary steps can be taken to prevent more teenagers from becoming an addict.
