Abstract
|
The objective of this paper is to study if the limiting factors affect loan accessibility of SMEs in the Klang Valley of Malaysia. The limiting factors to be studied are improper management records, lack of credible collateral and poor history of creditworthiness and any other factors that can be drawn from the interviews. It will also study the measures taken by SMEs to overcome the shortfall in financing and the consequent impact on SME development. It will also study the measures that financial institutions can adopt to overcome the limiting factors. The qualitative method of in-depth interview was conducted on 12 SMEs located in the Klang Valley of Malaysia. Each SME was represented by one interviewee. Interviewees comprised of owners, partners and managerial staff of the SMEs and are equipped with hands-on business and finance experiences of running their business. Secondary data reviews of literatures and reports were obtained from SME Corporation Malaysia. The study showed that most of the participants are not aware of the financing available and have no access to it. The information has not been effectively disseminated by the government agencies and the financial institutions. The main limiting factors that affect loan accessibility of SMEs are improper management records, lack of credible collateral and poor history of creditworthiness. For financing the SMEs resort to self-finance, reinvestment of business profits, cash sales and credit terms from suppliers. Most of the businesses are self-sustaining. To overcome the limiting factors, financial institutions should include non-fixed and social collateral and place more emphasis on improving the financial literacy and credit assessment of the SMEs. The study is limited by the unwillingness of SMEs to take part in interview for reasons of confidentiality. Additionally, in-depth interview is time-consuming and costly to conduct. The study reveals that there is a gap between availability and accessibility of financing for SMEs and this warrants more research on bridging the gap. A study on using digital technology to disseminate pertinent information to SMEs should be encouraged.
