Abstract
|
This study aims to explore the factors for lecturers’ code switching in their teaching and the perceptions of the lecturers towards classroom code switching. Relevant literature concerning code switching has been reviewed for the expansion of knowledge for the present study. This study is undertaken in a private university in Malaysia. This study employs quantitative and qualitative approaches. As such, the data collection methods that are incorporated in the study are questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. 30 lecturers are involved in the questionnaire and five lecturers are interviewed. It is found in this study that code switching is more frequently used for the purposes of constructing and delivering the lesson content more efficiently as well as building rapport with the students. Generally, the lecturers have positive attitudes towards the use of code switching practised by lecturers in classrooms. However, they are mindful of the negative effects in using code switching. Therefore, the reported use of code switching by lecturers is in moderate level.
