Abstract
|
The paper analyse a national sample of Malaysian living in Klang Valley with respect to their debt literacy and financial experiences. Debt literacy is measured by questions testing knowledge of fundamental concepts related to debt and self-assessed financial knowledge. Overall, the paper finds that debt literacy is low: many of the respondents unable to comprehend interest compounding. The paper finds that there is a strong relationship between education and income level. The higher the income or education background the higher their debt literacy. Malaysian gender does not show any difference in terms of their debt knowledge, both have similar level. Most of the respondents are not able to predict the repayment amount necessary for them to pay for a certain loan. Many of such people feel confuse and complicated about the financial service.
