Abstract

The rapid technology advancement and globalization have changed the business world operation philosophy from individual organization excellent to the supply chain performance excellent. As the result, supply chain management becomes one of the critical success factors for excellent in business performance. Several research studies were conducted to explore the aspect that influencing supply chain performance and competencies from different aspects and perspectives. The supply chain management is concerning the overall value stream processes occurring from
suppliers till customers. Most of the Multi-Nationals Company (MNC) starts to connect with the
subcontractors or suppliers which are usually SMEs in order to outsource those non-core
competencies works so that the precious company resources are focusing on the company core
competencies and hence to improve the company competitive advantage.
This research study is aligned with the current business trend; it is to identify the SMEs
organizational capabilities which have significant influence to the vendor procurement
preferences as antecedent towards supply chain competencies. Five key dimensions of
organizational capabilities were studied upon its influence toward vendor procurement preferences and supply chain competencies. A cross-sectional research design approach was
employed and the primary data were collected through online self-completion questionnaire. The
pilot test was conducted to ensure the survey questionnaire appropriateness prior to main data
collection. 200 respondents were targeted but only 58 respondents completed the questionnaire
where the response rate was only around 29% from across different demographic profiles. The
results from survey showed that the five identified organizational capabilities (i.e. company core
competencies, marketing strategy, company information management system, company social
responsibility compliance and technological innovation) have significant influence to the supply
chain competencies. The mediation effect of vendor procurement preferences between
organizational capabilities and supply chain competencies were tested by using hierarchical
regression analysis. From the multiple regression analysis, company information management
system and company social responsibility compliance are found to be the two most significant
predictors to supply chain competencies. Besides that, Hierarchical Regression analysis
discovered that the company social responsibility compliance intervened the impact of vendor
procurement system towards supply chain competencies in SMEs at Penang Malaysia.
This research study has implied that the SMEs should putting effort to the identified organization
capabilities in order to improve the supply chain competencies. The SMEs should prioritize on
the company information management system and technological innovation because these two
dimensions have most significant influence to supply chain competencies. The strong and
advance information management system would be able to improve the communication
effectiveness and efficiency hence reduce the non-value added activities and improve the time to
market or production cycle time. The technological innovation would help to improve the service
or product quality and hence to gain the competitive advantage in the industry. Research
limitations such as sampling method and sampling size were explained and the improvement
proposals were elucidated for example: to use quota sampling with snowball sampling for similar
research in future.
The results from research study have provided answers to the research questions, and meeting
the research objectives to understand the vendor procurement system being the antecedent,
mediating SME organizational capabilities towards higher level supply chain competencies.
Future study could explore into how the environmental policies moderates the impact of vendor
procurement system and extending to broader Malaysia and ASEAN SMEs.
