Title A study on the problems and challenges faced by first year students from Penang Medical College during their studies in Ireland / Masitah Binti Shahabudin
Abstract The issues facing students at the start of the academic year are not necessarily the same issues that they encounter throughout the year, though adjustment is often a matter of dealing with the unfamiliar. Lowe and Cook (2003) show that in the United Kingdom, although most students coped adequately with the transition into higher education, there was ‘a considerable minority’ who had problems, many of whom found university to be a negative experience and who failed to come to terms with the academic and social demands of university life. In Ireland, the National Strategy for Higher Education to 2030 highlights the need for a transitional programme as it states that ‘a positive first-year student experience is crucial to achieving the goals of higher education; failure to address the challenges encountered by students in their first year contributes to high drop-out and failure rates, with personal and system-wide implications’ (2011: 56). The purpose of this study is to provide for Penang Medical College (PMC) the reasons for the first year students having problems and challenges during their studies in Ireland, including on recommendations to overcome such problems. Data were drawn from survey responses of 110 PMC’s student and analysed to explore the points mentioned above. The sampling method used was a probability sampling design and combining primary & secondary data. The summary of reliability analysis on this study had clearly shown that the figures obtain for the Cronbach alpha value for most of the items or factors is above 0.7, which indicates that there is internal consistency for this research. Findings showed the main challenges that the students faced were on cultural barriers and social integration, for example homesickness, financial difficulties, sleeping problems However from the academic integration perspective, the results shown were very encouraging as students were very satisfied with the course content, facilities and the overall students experience in Ireland. This research had also provided an opportunity for the students to gives feedback for PMC’s Management on their opinion in Ireland and PMC as well as, to consider for improvement. To get a better findings and conclusion, the researcher would like to recommend for future research on doing this survey for every batch of students who had completed their first year in Ireland. This will provide PMC, with more consistent and comprehensive findings.
