Title A study of the supply chain integration: an empirical assessment for solar industry and components manufacturing in Malaysia. / Ooi Leong Keong
Abstract Renewable energy is gaining importance and the solar industry is a leading technology. Even thought photovoltaic (PV) solar modules are a matured product in its product life cycle the solar manufacturing industry in Malaysia is relatively new. There is a lack of studies that determines the relevant Supply Chain Activities, and to understand the influence of the determinants. Additionally, the inter-relationship between the Supply Chain Activities and the intermediating effect of the Supply Chain Integration are not well defined. Prior to this research, significant predictors and the effect of companies’ demographics on overall Supply Chain Effectiveness are also unclear. The research aims understand the individual impact of the Supply Chain Activities and the collective impact of the Supply Chain Integration on the overall effectiveness of the supply chain. The research also looks to uncover the extent of the Supply Chain Activities such as Supplier Partnership, Customer Relationship, Sharing of Information, Effect of Non-Tariff Barriers and Agreement of Vision and Goals. In addition, the research reviewed mediating effect coming from the Supply Chain Integration on the Supply Chain Activities, as well as the demographical influence. The scope of this research covers the module manufacturers and their upstream suppliers. As the research explores the activities across the chain, snowball sampling methodology is used to understand these views. There were 36 responses received for the survey. The Supply Chain Activities, mediating effect of the Supply Chain Integration and demographics are tested and analyzed using statistical tools in the SPSS software. The research shows that the selected Supply Chain Activities have some impact overall effectiveness of the supply chain. The strongest dimension was the Customer Relationship. The overall length of the supply chain for a solar module and the bill of materials are short. The customers’ needs are quickly reflected upstream. However, the analysis showed that the dimension of Supply Chain Integration and the demographic profiles were not significant. The research met its objective to uncover the gaps in knowledge. The research shows the best fit criteria and an empirical model that recommends for companies to focus on a stronger customer relationship in order for them to thrive, while monitoring effects of non-tariff barriers.
