Title Teaching reading comprehension sing stories in the ESL classroom / Glory Jiva Dhairiyam
Abstract The study dealt with the effectiveness of using stories to enhance learners’ comprehension skills. The results of findings revealed that using stories can be acknowledged as effective tools for teaching reading comprehension and other language elements for all levels of learners. Stories are excellent source for learning and teaching English to all level learners. The findings of the study also proved that stories through role-play created a great interest in learning the language as well as motivated learners to use the target language confidently. It further asserted that, stories with images helped learners to acquire more vocabulary as well as enhance in understanding the story content much easier. Stories are close to one’s life and they are user friendly. They are interesting and easy to understand compared to other types of materials such as newspapers, science fictions, fictions and novels. Therefore, this study has proved clearly that stories are great means to motivate learners to read. When interest is created to read, mastering a language will take place gradually. When learners are able to read, comprehending, mastering vocabulary as well motivate to learn a foreign language are rather easier as it has confirmed in this study.
