Abstract This study introduced an investigation of whether a particular dimension of anxiety is affected by a drama-based program and provides further insights into the impact of drama in English language learning. The findings of this study expand the scope of previous research on drama and language learning by considering students’ own observations regarding whether particular classroom practices impact their anxiety levels. Qualitative analyses explore the potential of drama practices on students’ comfort levels, confidence and motivation in speaking in the English language, although much more research is needed to confirm that this is the case. From a pedagogical perspective, a practical achievement of this study is that it provides language instructors and researchers with a basic understanding of the effects of drama on particular dimensions of oral communication. It is hoped that the potential of drama to enhance the confidence and motivation of the students in the English language learning is recognized and further explored. Although this drama program is viewed as a successful way to enhance the students’ motivation and confidence when learning a language, it is important to take into consideration the individual differences of students as some students may not prefer learning through drama techniques especially when the participation and interaction between the students are required. It is recommended that teachers balance the learning techniques in the lesson. A variety of activities should be introduced in the language classes to help students with different characteristics learn through the different activities that suit their needs and learning styles.
