Title Effects of total quality management (TQM) practices on employees’ organizational commitment in Penang semiconductor industry. / Leng Ching Lin
Abstract The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Total Quality Management (TQM) practices on employees‟ organizational commitment in Penang semiconductor industry. Moreover, it also aims to compare and determine which TQM practice has the greatest influence on employees‟ organizational commitment in the Penang semiconductor industry. Then, propose recommendations which are potential to bring about improvement of TQM practices that inevitably contributes towards employees‟ organizational commitment. The independent variables are “Customer Focus”, “Training and Education”, “Empowerment and Teamwork”, “Reward and Recognition”, and “Organizational Communication” while the dependent variable is “Organizational Commitment”. The entire 5 independent variables are hypothesized to react positively on dependent variable- organizational commitment. There were 180 questionnaires distributed in total. However, there were only 110 usable responds, as five was un-completed due to missing of data, while the rest of 65 did not make any return or reply yielding a response rate of 61.11%. Data analysis was conducted using statistical analysis software-SPSS to ascertain the goodness of the model variables. It was examine through the internal consistency procedure of reliability, factor and multiple regression analysis. Results of correlation showed that “Employees‟ Organizational Commitment”, which is the dependent variable of this study, exhibits positive significant and correlation with the entire independent variables, namely “Customer Focus” (+0.611), “ Reward and Recognition(+0.600), “Training and Education”(+0.598), “Organizational Communication” (+0.550) and “Empowerment and Teamwork”(+0.514). Whereas the most significant TQM practice in influencing employees‟ organizational commitment was attributed to “Reward and Recognition” (Component Matrix=0.859) which based on outcome from factor analysis. It was then followed by “Training and Education” (Component Matrix = 0.848),“Organization Communication” (Component Matrix = 0.836) , “Customer Focus” (Component Matrix = 0.800) and “Empowerment and Teamwork” (Component Matrix = 0.602). Theoretically this study has contributed to the literature on the TQM practices and organisational commitment. Practically, this study exhibits that TQM practices enhance job involvement, improve the level of job satisfaction, and persuade for greater organizational commitment. The effect of TQM practices in these aspects is absolute essential. It is important for organization to consider the commitment towards TQM practices and their outstanding execution. In addition, limitations of the study and suggestions for future research were also laid out in this study. To conclude, it is believed that an effective implementation of Total Quality Management (TQM) practices on employees‟ organizational commitment constitutes one of the most significant concepts for the success of an organization.
