Abstract
|
This paper is aimed to study the factors influencing training effectiveness in term of
knowledge and skill acquisition and application within a telecommunication firm. In
particular, analyses of the factors that affect training effectiveness were focused on
employee characteristic, training program and working environment. Specific
hypotheses relating each of these factors to (1) knowledge and skill acquisition (2)
knowledge and skill application were then developed. A survey was conducted among
the employees within the organization who have attended either formal in-house or
external training in the past 12 months and data from a sample of 246 employees was
analyzed using factor analysis, reliability analysis and hierarchical regression analysis.
The results revealed that, although all three hypothesized factors were significantly
positively related to knowledge and skill acquisition and application, working
environment had relatively stronger effect. Overall, the result also shows that the most
of the employees did not agree to the fact that they have acquired and applied the
knowledge and skill from training to their job. Limitations, implications of the findings
are discussed in the study and it ends with some strategic recommendations on how to
improve training effectiveness based on the factors discussed above.
