Abstract
|
The purpose of this micro-study was to examine the effectiveness of explicit teaching
of writing skills via an 8-week “Collaborative Peer Marked Learning” as an intensive
intervention program for upper primary students, specifically low-scoring Year 5
students in improving their writing skills. To achieve this aim, a quasi-experimental
design using survey questionnaire as well as a pre-test and post-test were used to
collect quantitative data. Therefore, a purposive sampling was used to select five
low-proficiency students to participate in this study. The treatment was in the form of
explicit teaching and collaborative peer marked learning. which is an intensive
intervention program for teaching and learning writing skills, particularly for lowachievers.
The findings proved that collaborative peer marked learning as an
intensive intervention program having a significant overall enhancement of Year 5
students’ writing ability. The findings of the study will be useful to ESL teachers and
educators as an alternative to assist them in teaching writing skills without pressure
on either pupils or teachers and most importantly, it encourages the pupils to take
ownership of their learning. It is suggested that future research will translate this
study to a bigger group and also include the perceptions of pupils and teachers
towards this methodology.
