Abstract
|
This study aims to investigate the factors hindering intrapreneurship development in Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Penang, Malaysia. It helps SMEs to comprehend intrapreneurship and seek opportunities for its successful implementation, by understanding the employees’ perception and motivations towards its attainment. Literature review conducted observed that the factors fostering entrepreneurship development can be broadly grouped into five categories: Organisational Support, Supervisor’s Characteristics, Individual’s Entrepreneurial Qualities, Individual's Career Aspiration and Individual’s Commitment. Based on these concepts, the researcher has proposed a theoretical framework and collected data based on a survey conducted among employees of SMEs in Penang, Malaysia.
The results indicated that Organisational Support and Supervisor’s Characteristics are key variables of importance in determining the factors hindering intrapreneurship development in SMEs in Penang, Malaysia. After consolidating the findings, the study ends with some strategic recommendations. The study began in July 2013 and took about five months to complete.
The study’s conclusions are based on findings from literature review and the survey. It presents guidelines for top management teams to make strategic decisions for successful implementation of intrapreneurship in respective organisations.
