Abstract
|
The amount of adult learners who take part in distance learning has been grown very fast recently due to its advantages. In spite of the growth, the high attrition rate in distance learning has been of concern to many higher education institutions and organisations.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors influencing the learner dropouts in Open Distance Learning environment at Wawasan Open University. In the other words, it is to determine whether the adult learners dropouts are varied in personal factors (i.e., health issues, lack of family support, change of job), financial capability factors (i.e., difficulty in obtaining study grant or scholarships, higher course fee), and academic factors (i.e., course relevancy, inadequate tutor support). In order to achieve this objective, all WOU adult learners during the academic year 2012-2013 were examined including dropouts learners.
A survey was conducted using online questionnaire to evaluate the learners’ dropouts. Quantitative data were collected from 57 adult learners who had dropped out from the courses. The analysis of results showed that the financial capability is the strongest predictor of dropouts, thus it plays a significant role in determining the learner’s dropouts in WOU. Therefore, lower dropout rates can be achieved if the adult learners are well supported by financial institution in order for them to complete the courses that they enrol for.
Finally, the findings from this research also provide the basis for making recommendations for further research and improving policy and practice
