Abstract

Mutual fund is a collective investment in stocks, bonds or securities owned by a group of investors but managed by a professional fund manager. This study tend to focus only consumers in Penang, to determine their acceptance level towards mutual fund investment; and to investigate what are the factors that significantly affected their attitude and perception towards mutual funds. A total of five independent variables were identified in this study, namely awareness, affordability, return potential, safety and past experiences. There were 53 respondent out of total 80 questionnaires distributed and five hypotheses were developed to examine the relationship between the identified independent variables and consumers’ attitude and perception towards mutual funds. The findings showed that there were significant positive relationship between the identified independent variables and consumers’ attitude and perception towards mutual funds where in overall, respondents were agreed that awareness, affordability, return potential, safety and past experiences have significant affected their attitude and perception towards mutual funds. Several recommendations were given which may help to improve the acceptance level of investors towards mutual funds.
