Abstract
|
This study explores factors contributing to high debt among Millennial. The previous studies on this topic linked material values, money management skills, and economic factors to credit card and student debt. However this study extends the previous studies by investigating various factors contributing to high debt among Millennial in Penang. The study helps provide some insights to Millennial as well as government agencies and financial institutions to create awareness on debt management. After reviewing a number of literatures, it was observed that improper use of credit card, inability to repay loan, spending behaviour & luxury lifestyles and lacking of financial knowledge contributes to high debt among Millennial. Based on these concepts, the researcher has proposed a theoretical framework of high debt among Millennial before continuing the research. A survey was conducted among the selected youth in the ages of 23-36 and all necessary data and information were collected via a specific designed questionnaire. The results shows that, there is significant relationship between the independent and dependent variables. After consolidating the findings, the study ends with some strategic recommendations for debt management among Millennial. The entire research project has taken about five months to complete and it began in January 2018.
