Title A study on the effect of rewards on employee performance in organizations - selected ICT project based companies in Sibu, Sarawak / Lee Tieng Kiing.
Abstract The study was conducted to measure the effect of rewards (Intrinsic and Extrinsic) on employees' job performance. The theories that support the theoretical framework are Maslow Hierarchy of Needs, Herzberg's Two-Factor Theory and Social Exchange Theory. The experiences and personal opinions of employees working in seven (7) different selected ICT project based companies were analysed through 45 questionnaires and 8 persons (Management level) interviewed in Sibu, Sarawak, Malaysia through both online and onsite approaches. The key objective of the study was to find whether rewards can affect the performance of an employee. Statistical package (SPSS) has been used to conduct the data analysis of the study. Employees like 5 managers, 7 supervisors, 16 salespersons, 5 system engineers and 12 technicians were chosen through simple random sampling. The focus of the study was to distribute and highlight the types of rewards suitable for the employees and create a balance in distribution of rewards so that every employee contributes his or her efforts for the company 'growth especially for the ICT companies in Sibu, Sarawak, Malaysia. This study also focuses on two major rewards, intrinsic and extrinsic. Rewards plays a motivational role in the personality of employee and urge them to produce loyalty, commitment and demonstrate good performance. The findings shown, there is a strong relationship between both type of rewards and on employee performance but there is no gap between intrinsic and extrinsic rewards towards employee performance. Most of the employees in ICT companies in Sibu prefer monetary rewards (extrinsic rewards) such as salary increment and bonuses. The study has verified and explored further research opportunities that can enhance the understanding of rewards and employee performance. This study results have both theoretical implication and practical implication.
