Implementation and effectiveness of matrix structure in R&D organization / Prashanth Balakrishnan
|
Abstract
|
The study focuses mainly on the effectiveness of Matrix organization design in R&D
organization. The literature review has been conducted on various journals and
secondary data on matrix design, structure, strengths and weaknesses. Literature also
covers the popularity of Matrix through various industry analyses on organizations that
have adapted Matrix structure for their success in managing their businesses and people.
Research focuses mainly on the challenges encountered by employees working under
the Matrix umbrella, suitability of Matrix for the organizational goals and also the
project delivery.
Byson is the R&D Organization selected for the study and with specific attention to
R&D scope; the research has successfully examined the effectiveness of Matrix in terms
of dual authority, employee engagement, project management factors, organizational
goals and on overall employee job motivation working in the structure.
Survey consists of the combination of close ended and open ended questionnaires which
was conducted with the respective team members. The questionnaires were prepared to
comprise all elements as mentioned above. Data analysis was then carried out using
SPSS software to evaluate the outcome of the survey questionnaires.
Finding revealed that the Matrix is definitely the right way forward for the organization
of which the study was conducted but in term of its effectiveness in employee
motivation seems to be still at average level. It is very much evident and proven from
the survey that Matrix structure works best for projects management process as they
bagged many successes in terms of achieving product requirements, product launch on
time and Matrix align well with the organizations goals and objectives. Certain counter
measures as recommended to be taken to further improve the communication among
team members, transparency of decision making process, collaboration between dual
authorities when it comes to performance appraisal and employee’s personal
development. All the measures would eventually increase the overall employee’s
motivation in working within the Matrix structure
