Effective leadership behaviours and employee job switch intention: is happiness at work the missing link? / Lai Fee Li.
Abstract
Effective leadership behaviours and happiness at work are extensively recognized as influential factors in employee job switch intention. Employees are always the greatest assets of an organization. Employees are more likely to switch jobs if they perceive that their supervisor display ineffective leadership behaviours. Examining the relationship between 5 dimensions of leadership behaviours and employee's job switch intention with the link of happiness at work from a sample of 281 employees in the SME manufacturing companies, it was found that leader aptitude, emotive and honor tended to be a stronger predictor of employee job switch intention and happiness at work. Employee job switch intention has a significant relationship with all dimensions of leadership behaviours, and aptitude (leader competencies and leader motivation skill) appears to be most significant. However, the influence of leadership behaivours on employee job switch intention was mediated by happiness at work. Thus, it can be concluded that leadership behaviours are related to employee job switch intention and happiness at work, particularly, leader aptitude, emotive and honor as these have a stronger influence on both employee job switch intention and happiness at work.
