Abstract
|
Medical care is a form a human service sector, serving and taking care of those who
are ill. Caring for the ill together with the high responsibility predisposes medical
professional to burnout. Burnout has been shown to have ill effects on the health of
the professionals and the patients under their care. The objective of this study is to
study the prevalence of burnout and the differences in burnout among medical
officers in two hospitals in Malaysia. This study also aims to study the local
demographic characteristics and risk factors associated with burnout. A cross
sectional survey was carried out in 2 government hospitals, Kuala Lumpur General
Hospital (KLGH) and Hospital Sultanah Aminah Johor Baru (HSAJB). A total of
100 medical officers were randomly selected to participate from each hospital. The
prevalence of high burnout among medical officers was found to be 59% at HSAJB
and 43% at KLGH. No demographic characteristic was found to be associated with
high burnout. Increasing number of active oncall was found to be significantly
associated with high work burnout in KLGH. The lack of own choice of department
placement was associated with high client burnout. Lack of intention to further study
and unsuccessful transfer requests were also significantly associated with burnout.
74.5% of the medical officers had an intention to quit their current job in the next 2
years and this was found to have a significant association with high burnout. High
workload, long working hours and lack of staff appear to be the main complains by
these medical officers. Urgent measures need to be taken to address these issues to
ensure a higher job satisfaction and retention of medical officers in government
service.
