Abstract
|
The purpose of this research is to identify the dominant factors influencing Green Consumerism in the Malaysian society while observing whether the factors affecting Green Consumerism differs by demographic profile. The research applied the Triangulation method, which covers the quantitative as well as qualitative approach. Hence, research tools consisting of self-administered questionnaires, interviews and observations were used to collect information from 103 respondents with diverse backgrounds. The data were analyzed with Statistical Package of Social Sciences Software (SPSS) version 20. Based on the results of the Pearson Correlation Coefficient test, ANOVA, Multiple Regression and Chi Square test, three out of four variables were proven to be the best predictors or most dominant factors influencing Green Consumerism in Malaysia. The most prominent factor is Social influence, followed by Perceived Environmental Responsibility and Environmental attitude. In contrast, Government’s role had a negative impact on Green Consumerism. Even though many people considered the Government’s Role to be very crucial and an important factor in impacting Green Consumerism, they however felt that at present, due to inconsistency in policy implementation, weak coordination between Central and State governments as well as poor law enforcement, has created bureaucratic issues and affected its function and role. Differences in demographic profiles for all variables were shown to be insignificant in influencing Green Consumerism. The finding of Social Influence, Perceived Environmental Responsibility and Environmental Attitude as the main predictors of Green Consumerism will enable the Malaysian government and policy makers to strategize their policy implementation and law enforcement planning to serve the public better and to curb future imbalances pertaining to environmental protection and preservation measures. This result will also serve as a guideline for private business entities to plan their marketing strategies for competitive advantage.
