Abstract
|
This research examined the relationship between pay, supervision, the job itself and job satisfaction (intrinsic and extrinsic job satisfaction) among employees in WOU Penang. The independent variables in this study are namely pay, supervision and the job itself while the dependent variable is job satisfaction. The hypotheses of the relationship developed between the three antecedents mentioned above and job satisfaction are based on the arguments that pay, supervision and the job itself would greatly affect staff’s turnover if these factors failed to create job satisfaction amongst employees. Herzberg two-factor theory was used in this study to define and explore the study further.
A total of 103 questionnaires were distributed to the employees of WOU Penang in between middle of March to the middle of April 2013. Out of the 103 questionnaires distributed, as many as 99 usable questionnaires were returned yielding a response rate of 96.12%. The collected data were subjected to multivariate statistics which includes factor analysis, reliability analysis, descriptive analysis, correlational analysis and multiple regression analysis.
The findings revealed that the job itself is an important aspect that WOU needs to look into as it is positively correlated with intrinsic job satisfaction. On the other hand, a good supervisor or even well paid employees may not be extrinsically satisfied. This finding has shown in the results of negatively correlated relationship between pay and extrinsic job satisfaction and negatively correlated relationship between supervision with extrinsic job satisfaction. The findings however supported all three hypotheses.
This study also gave theoretical implications for academics and also management implications for managers. Theoretically, this study contributed to the literature on pay, supervision, the job itself and job satisfaction. Practically, it serves as a purpose of a guideline basis for managers as a framework that helps them to satisfy their employees in order to retain them. Limitations of the study and suggestions for future research were also laid out in this study. In conclusion, this study revealed that pay, supervision and the job itself affect the intrinsic and extrinsic of job satisfaction of employees in WOU Penang.
